      Jim was a sergeant in the marines in both the Korean War and the Viet Nam War, and later a marine recruiter. In 1994 he was elected Mayor of Hagerman. He reads a great deal and is well versed in world affairs. He enjoys cattle and horses.
      After his first wife, Donna McCauley and Jim divorced she married Gene Fred Kovar 11 Jan 1958 and took both children, Debra and Scott. Debra changed her last name to Kovar but Scott did not. His second wife, Dorothy, called "Dot" was ill for a couple of years with a blood condition before dying.

      OBITUARY: Hagerman, James "Jim" Virgil Norwood departed this life for the next on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006.
      Jim, a lifetime resident of Hagerman, proudly served his country for 23 years, retiring from the United States Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant in 1974. Jim was stationed around the world, including Korea, where he participated in the battles of Kumwa Valley and Heart Break Ridge during the Korean War. After returning to the states to serve for a few years, Jim was shipped to Okinawa, Japan, in 1958 with G Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, where he learned judo and continued to hone his expertise in marksmanship.
      In 1961 Jim served as a marksmanship instructor at MCRD in San Diego, and from there was shipped to Cuba during the Cuban Missle Crisis. In 1967, Jim joined M. Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam, where he saw heavy action and was wounded and honored with the Purple Heart.
      While recovering from his injury, Jim was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii, at the Kaneohoe Marine Corps Air Station before departing for a second tour of Vietnam with A Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, where he was stationed for five months before returning to the states to complete his military career.
      Jim exchanged his military dress blues for cowboy boots and denim and cowboyed for several years working cattle for the Star and Brace Ranch on Juniper Mountain and Brailsford Ranch before accepting an appointment as mayor of Hagerman in 1995. Jim served the citizens of Hagerman for 2 1/2 consecutive terms before retiring in 2004. Jim was a devoted life member of the Scottish Rite and the Hagerman Masonic Lodge No. 78, serving in several Mason leadership capacities, including district deputy grand master, secretary and a master in his 30-plus year commitment.
      Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy "Dot" Norwood (1931-1981) and parents, Virgil and Ardith (Parrott) Norwood. Jim is survived by his devoted younger sister, Virginia "Ginger" Hanson of Oakland, Calif.; and four loving children, David Norwood of Winchester, Tenn., Debra Kovar of Twin Falls, Catherine (Jude) Anderson of Twin Falls and Scott (Anna) Norwood of Hagerman. Jim "G-Pa" is loved and greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Schandy Sellers of Tennessee,Autumn Haynes of Boise, Zachary (Janelle)Norwood of Tennessee, Shane (Brina) Norwood of Filer, Rebecca (Shane) Strickland of Twin Falls and Jenny (Sonny) Lara of Texas. Jim is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
      A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Demaray's Gooding Funeral Chapel, 737 Main St. in Gooding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jim's name to the NRA (National Rifle Association) for the lobbying efforts to protect our Second Amendment rights, of which Jim was a passionate supporter and advocate.
