David's last name was actually spelled "Howlaston" in the parish of Kirkcudbright register. David was a master boot and shoemaker and his home (and presumably his business) was located on High Street, just near the corner of Union Street in Kirkcudbright. It may still be standing. The 1861 census for the parish of Kirkcudbright showed the Houlistons as having a house in which 12 rooms had one or more windows. This was a standard question asked of the census-takers. This would indicate a rather large home. David said he employed "7 men and 1 boy" in his boot and shoemaking business, so business must have been brisk! In addition, David served as a Burgess for the Royal Burgh of Kirkcudbright.

      1861 Scotland census - High Street, Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbright 871/00 003/00 019:
