William Houliston was born circa. 1837. The 1851 Census lists him as being a nephew aged 14 years born in Oxnam Roxburghshire. This is the only reference to him being a nephew as the 1841 Census doesn’t stipulate this and he is on both his mother and father’s death certificates as a son and there has been no other mention in the family that he was anything but a son and brother. That of course doesn’t necessarily prove his status in the family either way. The 1841 Census states that he was 5 years old. The ship’s passenger list when he came to Australia with his family in 1852 states that he was 15 years. His headstone at the Cowra cemetery and obituary in the Cowra newspaper state that he was 73 in 1911.
William died Wattamondara on 7/10/1911 aged 73. William and Catherine are buried at Cowra together near John and Mary. William’s obituary stated that he had a daughter Isabella surviving him and a son and daughter having predeceased him. I can find no record of this son and daughter having been born or dying. Perhaps they died shortly after birth. There may be more information on either William or Catherine’s death Certificates.
From copy of William Houliston's death certificate. Had heart disease. The informant was William David Houliston the eldest of John and Mary's children. Doesn't seem as accurate. Age 73 when he died in 1911. Married aged 31 the same year as John (who was actually about 5 years younger). Place of birth, Scotland (perhaps the informant knew it wasn't the same place as his father). Married Catherine McColl, daughter Isabella McIntyre 30 (more likely 34). Not known how long he was in Victoria, even though he came to Australia with the informant's father. Father William Houliston, mother Ann Wentworth Gibson and as in the obituary I male child, 1 female child deceased.
