Arriveer as 19-jarige met sy ouers, 2 broers en 'n suster in 1688 met die "Voorschooten" in die Kaap. Na sy pa se geweldadige dood het hy en sy broer Claude voortgeboer op hulle pa se plaas. Teen 1700 was hy in besit van 'n veeplaas De Fortuin.
