Shock at sudden death of family man enjoying a round of golf

LAUGHTER fills a room covered in flowers and cards as family and friends gather to recall fond and amusing memories of a man who touched everyone he met.

It is this scene of his comfortable family home that Peter Howliston, a Whitley Bay man devoted to his family, would be content to see.

The grandfather-of-two, who shared a home with his wife of 42 years in St Mary's Avenue, died recently of a heart attack doing what he loved best, playing golf.

A familiar face at Whitley Bay Golf Club for over 30 years, Peter, 63, was proud but modest about his prestigious role as the president of national organisation, the English Schools Golf Association.

The former history teacher worked tirelessly to get youngsters from every kind of background involved in the sport, taking them all over the UK to play, say his family.

Speaking to the News Guardian, wife Hazel said: "He was a very modest man and never boasted about himself.

"He was the most contented person, he was so happy with whatever he got."

Gordon Oliver, captain of Whitley Bay Golf Club, said: "Peter certainly put more into the development of youngsters than he took out of the sport.

"He has brought great honour to Whitley Bay Golf Club and will be sadly missed."

Eric Peel, a close friend to Peter since the pair were teachers at Blyth Tynedale High School, now Blyth Community College, said: "He was a fine history teacher, he was passionate about his subject."

Eric was with Peter when he died suddenly on the golf course.

"We were laughing the hole before and we were taking the mick out of each other", he said.

The death of the family-man came as a shock to family and friends, who say he was a fit man and rarely ill.

Peter, who taught for 26 years at Tynedale School in Blyth, was also a member of the North East Wine Tasting Society, had an allotment and was a regular at the Briar Dene pub's quiz night.

Peter's passions did not stop there, he was a devoted grandfather who adored his young grandchildren.

"He said he knew it would be good having grandchildren but didn't know it would be this wonderful", said Hazel.

Jenny, one of Peter's three children, added: "He was enchanted with the little ones. He helped out with them, he helped everyone.
"He was a much loved man in many ways."
