- Jean emigrated to the U.S. (Philadelphia) in 1909 through Ellis Island. There were nine children in the family. She was the second child to emigrate, following by two years her older brother James Sim Downie who paid for her passage. The rest of Jean's family (three younger brothers and three younger sisters along with her father and mother) emigrated (also through Ellis Island) in 1914. The eldest child, a female, remained and married in Scotland.

That trip (where they returned 10 Oct 1916 through Ellis Island) was where Jean Buchan Houliston took daughter Evelyn and brother Andrew (third child Craig wasn't born yet) back to Scotland to show off her family to the Scottish relatives. Not sure how long they were there. They went to Rosehearty but not sure if they went to Edinburgh -- although suspect they did because there were many more Houliston relatives in Edinburgh than there were Downie ones in Rosehearty. A relative in Rosehearty in the late 1970's (Margaret Simpson) remembered that visit.
A couple of interesting items about the Cameronia I (there was also a Cameronia II). In early 1917, she was commandered by the British as a troop ship and sunk by a German submarine on April 15, 1917, in the Mediterranean. <http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=came1>
In 1915, Cameronia also had an interesting connection to the Lusitania per the following:
