Notes for Edward Atkinson:
First of 8 children - four boys and 4 girls. Grace Retson indicates this family farmed in Ferland Saskatchewan
before returning to Merrickville.
Later memorandum: Thomas Atkinson who emigarted from Armagh , Northern Ireland settled on a quartersection
with his parents William Atkinson and Jane (Coulter) Atkinson. Later he married Margaret Holliston. When son
Edward married Abbie Spicer Thomas gave his son a quarter section across and opposite his farm , along with a
team of horses a cow some machinery and equipment. He did this for each one of his sons until the last son
Tommy who got the homestead.
Ed and his family stayed on this farm until about 1897. Ed and a man name of Burchall entered into a butcher
business in Perth. They subsequent moved to Smith Falls

Abigail Almeda Spicer, daughter of Robert Nicholson and Elizabeth Jane (Perrin) Spicer, was born 13 September
1860, in Prescott, Ontario, Canada. She married Edward Atkinson on 3 December 1879 in Maynard, Ontario. She
died 10 Jul 1940 in Merrickville, Ontario, Canada. Her grand daughter Grace Retson recalls staying with her
Grandmother in Ferland Saskatchewan when she was very young and sharing a bed. Unlike her Grandmother
Burns who was quite stylish, Grace recalls she wore long skirts to the floor and 4 slips on at least one occasion.
