| 5 | Farmstead of Gabriel Rossouw and Rachel Hugo De Doorns House Estate is a declared national monument. The 60 morgen Estate was granted to Gabriel Rossouw in 1759. He must have built a house here, evidently consisting of three rooms in a row, facing west with the kitchen at the north end. The centre room was markedly wider than the orthers. The centre gable is dated 1769 and the outline consists of curves with rather uncommon and somewhat awkward scrolls. The first transfer took place in 1818 to Pieter Jacobus de Villiers, whose initials appear on the back gable, dated 1823. There can be no doubt that De Villiers enlarged the house to the size of its present H-shape. It boasts some very fine yellowwood doors, with stinkwood inlay and elaborate yellowwood architraves. The house was Victorianised during the middle nineteenth century. The homestead, which retained its thatch, is flanked by modernised outbuildings. |
