- Agnes Houliston* 23/04/1871 to
* emigrated to South Africa early years of 20th cent
Agnes Houliston Baillie was one of the daughters of Jane Gibson nee Gray whose mother's family name was Houlison. In the old family bible she is listed as b Smailholm ( a small village in Roxburghshire, not 10 miles from Kelso in the Scottish Borders)
She maried David Baillie 3 January 1899 and they emigrated to S.A. shortly afterwards. They had one daughter (Lexie) who died young. David Baillie was brother to Isobel Baillie a well-known opera singer in the 1920s and 30s. Their death dates are not recorded in my documentation. Agnes was only one of the 10 Gibson family to be given the name Houliston, all the others had Gray as a middle name. Agnes, Known in the family as Nan, and her sister Elizabeth ( Betty ) and two of her brothers Robert ( Bob ) and Thomas all emigrated to South Africa in the early years orf the 20th century. Bob was a founder member of the prestigious Johannesburg Bowling Club and became an international bowler of some repute, winning the Transvaal champonship 10 times as well as international honours. I (Ken Nichol)am currently writing his biography.
first child of Jane and Robert Gibson, born 23 April 1871, at Smailholm; and named Agnes "Houlison" GIBSON
