Ann Wentworth Gibson was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland the daughter of David Gibson and his wife Mary Wood. Her birth date is somewhat of a mystery as her death certificate states that she was 77 years old when she died on 7/11/1879 which would indicate that she was born c. 1802. The same death certificate states that she was married at 30 years old which would indicate that she was born c. 1810 as we know she was married to William Houliston in 1840. The ship’s passenger list when she arrived in 1852 states her age to be 42, again indicating that she was born c. 1810. Her siblings who came to Australia with her family appear to be born between 1811 and 1819. Unless there were several other siblings who remained in Scotland who were born between 1802 and 1810 it seems that the 1810 birth date may be correct.
When the Houliston/Gibson families arrived in Melbourne on board the “Lady Head” on 30/8/1852 to ship’s passenger list showed the Gibson family to consist of:
David Farmer age 70
Elizabeth “ age 40 died Daylesford 1863 age 52
John “ age 38 died Daylesford 1891 age 80
Mary “ age 35 died Daylesford 1889 age 75
James “ age 33 died Daylesford 1894 age 76
David “ age 17 died Young NSW 1898 age 62
I have not been able to find the death date of David Gibson snr.
David Gibson jr. was the son of John Gibson and his wife Janet Hall. She did not come to Australia with the family but may have died before their departure as she is listed on John’s death certificate as his wife and David jr’s death certificate and marriage registration as his mother. The other siblings did not marry.
The Gibsons settled in the Daylesford area of Victoria. They were farmers. When John died in 1891 David was still in Victoria but when he died in 1898 the family were living in the Young area not far from the Houlistons at Watttamondara. David jr. married Sarah Sefton Mary Stewart on 30th October, 1878 at age 42. David, his wife Mary and many of their descendants are buried at Young cemetery.
