- He qualified for his Certificate of Competency 2nd Class at London on 2 August 1848. Register Ticket No34614.
Afterwards sailed as Captain of Mayflower in 1851 (London-Jamaica) and Captain in Florentia from 8 November 1852 to 22 November 1854 (London - Sydney - Callao - Valparaiso - London).
Then he went as Mate in Gloriosa to Calcutta in 1855 followed by another voyage to India and, between 1861 and 1869 more runs to New Zealand and Australia but for which we don't have the details. (Public Record Office ref BT122/1).
According to the Alphabetical Register of Masters (BT115/1) he had sailed as a captain in 1845 (Newcastle to London), same in 1846, and in 1848 from London to Newport, Mon., and another voyage Liverpool-London.
On the blaxland.com site at /ozships/plist there is a list of his Australian voyages from 1833 to 1853, the early ones being in the fishery and whaling grounds.
Sometime between 1881 & 1884 Thomas Hopper Banks sailed to South Africa together with:
his wife
step-daughter Mary Ann Sandham (needed the SA climate for her health condition)
daughter and son-in-law Eliza Banks and William Howard Lavarack
William's brother Ernest Augustus Lavarack and his wife Eliza Sainsbury
