Obituaries
'Bud' Houliston Jr., 70, civic leader, helped people
George B. "Bud" Houliston Jr.'s business was selling industrial equipment, but his passion was helping people.
Mr. Houliston, owner of G.B. Houliston Co. in Cincinnati, was a past president of the Fort Thomas Lions Club, a former vice president of the Cincinnati Rotary Club, and a member of the board of the Greater Cincinnati YMCA. He was also a former warden of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Fort Thomas, where he sang in the choir.
"He was very civic-minded, always trying to give something to other people. He treated people with respect," said his son, Rick Houliston of Fort Thomas. "Dad was very outgoing, very personable. He commanded a room whenever he entered it. People reacted to him."
Mr. Houliston, 70, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
His father started G.B. Houliston Co. and Mr. Houliston took it over, working there for 42 years.
His work outside the business, though, is what really earned him respect.
He was heavily involved in the YMCAs of Greater Cincinnati, serving on the tri-state board of the organization and helping get the Campbell County YMCA in Fort Thomas built in 1966.
He also was a past president of the Highland Country Club in Fort Thomas, a board member of the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association and a lifetime member of ASHRAE.
If Mr. Houliston were a member of an organization, said his son, he took that as a personal commitment to serve it. For the YMCA, for example, he almost never missed a board meeting, even if he was out of town on business.
Besides his son, survivors include his wife, Joan Houliston; sons, David Houliston of West Chester, Ohio, and Rob Houliston of Fort Thomas; a sister, Tippie Kennedy of Cincinnati; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
