Middle name is noted as Jane in Canton Commercial Advertiser Tuesday, May 6, 1930 page 1
Entitled: Unusual Interest Marks Charter Day
This means the middle initial 'L' in the 1850 census is probably a 'J'?

Mrs. Sparrowhawk Passes at Age of 92 GRADUATED FROM REPARATORY SCHOOL OF ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY Funeral services for Mrs. Mary O’Neill Sparrowhawk, widow of the late George W. Sparrowhawk, of Lisbon, who passed away one week ago this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert M. Purvis, 5 Elm street, this village, were conducted at the Purvis home, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev. Dr. Walter P. Doty, rector of Grace Church, officiating. Burial was made in White Church Cemetery, Lisbon. Mrs. Sparrowhawk came of a very interesting Lisbon family, and one that was intimately associated with St. Lawrence University in its earlier days. She was born in Lisbon on April 24, 1850, the daughter of Andrew and Mary Houliston O’Neill. She was ninety-two years old last April 24. She attended the Lisbon schools and entered the Preparatory Class of St. Lawrence University in the early sixties of the last century, when Dr. John Stebbins Lee had charge. She graduated In the class of 1864 of the preparatory school. A brother, Andrew Jay O’Neill, for those O’Neills spelled the name with two “lls”, graduated at the same time. Andrew Jay O’Neill died in 1866, two years after his leaving St. Lawrence.Mrs. Sparrowhawk had another brother, James O’Neill, a member of the class of 1871 of St. Lawrence University, but who transferred to Cornell, taking his B. A. degree in 1871 and his law degree from Union College in 1878, James O’Neill took up his practice in Neilsville, Wis., and had one of the most successful careers of any of the young men leaving St. Lawrence County for a generation. James O’Neill was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly, he served as district attorney of Clark County with distinction, and circuit judge of Wisconsin from 1898 to 1922, a period of twenty-four years. It is recalled that a young lawyer, Harleigh Sheldon, a graduate of St. Lawrence University in 1873, who studied law in the office of Sawyer & Russell of Canton, went to Neilsville in the seventies and became a law partner of James O’Neill. Harleigh Sheldon married, Ida Sherman, a daughter of Dr. R. R. Sherman of Canton and they made their home In Neilsville. To them a son was born, Robert Sheldon, now a resident of Canton. Harleigh died in 1879 and his father-in-law went to Neilsville and brought his body to Canton for burial in Evergreen. Mrs. Sparrowhawk, of this interesting family of O’Neills, married George W. Sparrowhawk on Dec. 31, 1868. They made their home on the old O’Neill homestead, on the St. Lawrence River below Red Mills, town of Lisbon, which was settled in 1798. Her husband died several years ago, end she has resided with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Purvis, since, in recent years in Canton after they removed here from Lisbon. Mrs. Sparrowhawk leaves a son and daughter, William Sparrowhawk of Madrid, and Mrs. Purvis. There is a niece, Mrs. Marion Cawley, of Neilsville, Wis. Mrs. Sparrowhawk lived a long and interesting life and had during her later years memories for the past. She was up to her last months interested in happenings of the day, news of the war, and politics and liked to discuss causes and effects. She was a woman of fine mind and used it always. She delighted in having friends in to visit, and enjoy the pastimes of the home she retained an interest in life up to the end. She was a dear, sweet woman of charm always. Her family and many friends regret her going.
